Made for today: This look was created for a guest who came in to get MADE for a wedding. We chose grape purple, gold and dark brown eyeshadows and applied soft highlights and a warm russet blush colour. To accentuate the face and finish the look, we used a vibrant fuchsia lip colour.

As I’m sure is evident by now, I love mid to late 19th Century/Early to mid 20th Century fashion. Back then the fabrics were of stellar quality, details on garments were second to none and commanded a grand elegance that most of our clothes today (even the most luxurious) lack.
I’ve always loved the hourglass silhouettes created by CORSETS. I remember being 9/10 years old, watching “style with Elsa Klensch” on CNN (as opposed to playing with Barbie dolls), and seeing so many gorgeous re-creations of this era of fashion. My love for and journey with corsets began then. I soon discovered that they were once a symbol of status. It is believed that In the 1830s when corsets were in vogue, working class women did not go through the discomfort of wearing tight laced corsets because they needed loose garments to carry out their activities. The higher the class of the lady, the heavier the corset and the more confining it was. This was because a lady of wealth did not need freedom of movement for household duties.
The word ‘corset’ actually originates from the Latin ‘corpus’ which itself means body. ‘Corset’ came into use in English when in 1785, The Ladies Magazine coined the term to describe a “quilted waistcoat” called ‘un corset’ in French: fascinating, isn’t it!?

So, that time of the year – WARDROBE REVAMP – but OH the dilemma and pondering over what goes (to charity….or to your annoying sisters who fervently raid your wardrobe!) and what stays. Noticed how some of the best shows on TV capture the influence of late 19th / early 20th century fashion – Downton Abbey, The Paradise, The Young Victoria, Pride & Prejudice etc? Evidently, there is a renewed appreciation for classic and regal elegance. The notion that one mustn’t “bear it all” to be attractive or desirable is fast returning to our screens and is certainly most welcomed!
With more features of truly beautiful pieces on screen – CORSETS, LACE & SILK GOWNS, EXAGGERATED BALL GOWNS, GORGEOUSLY CRAFTED HATS, 2014 trends will no doubt add elements of these graceful silhouettes – I’m certainly loving and looking forward to it! Everything about that era of fashion screams regal beauty, opulence and elegance!
I recently attended the viewing of “Valentino: Master of Couture” at Somerset House in london, where some of the pieces expressed accents of vintage fashion – I was in absolute awe of the pieces. The intricacy of the embroidery, panelling work, drapes, colour blocks – Amazing. With such fine and detailed work – ’tisn’t hard to see why Valentino was and still remains a True Fashion Icon.
I hope the creative world is paying attention and incorporating the increasing preference for classic style and beauty where garments are concerned! – Let’s see what the global high streets produce in 2014!
